The stories of the two couples start when they were young. Marcus grew up next to Sasha Tran, played by Ali Wong, a celebrity chef who has her own line of restaurants. Fred and Charlotte Field, played by Charlize Theron, also go way back, to when Charlotte used to babysit him. Now she is Secretary of State and way more successful than he is.
