The five cyber threats to which we must pay attention, according to Accenture

The consultancy Accenture has just published a new cybersecurity report in which the trends of the cyber threats observed and analyzed during the first half of the year are examined.

Recent studies have confirmed that more than 146,000 million confidential data will be hacked in the next five years, while we have witnessed almost 6,000 million malware attacks only in the first half of 2018.

A complex and very worrisome situation in which the activity of cyber threats originating in Iran will intensify, attacks on global supply chains will widen, critical infrastructure will be a more recurrent objective and cybercrime with financial motivation will continue to increase.

The consultancy Accenture has just published a new cybersecurity report (available here) that examines the trends of cyber threats observed and analyzed during the first half of the year, in addition to taking the crystal ball to anticipate how cyber incidents they can evolve in the next six months. Namely:

  • According to these experts, the Iranian cyber threat is completely real based on new evidence showing that threat actors based in that country and groups sponsored by their state are expanding their activities and malicious capabilities.
  • Supply chains have become a key target for cybercriminal espionage and for hacktivist groups seeking to earn money or strategic and political notoriety.
  • Critical infrastructure is a tempting and high-value target for cybercriminals, while the oil and natural gas industry will continue to be an attractive target for malicious actors throughout the second half of 2018.
  • Malware for cryptocurrency mining has been one of the fastest growing areas in cybercrime this year and is likely to continue in 2019.
  • Advanced Persistent Threats (APT) have become more motivated by financial causes and are no longer used primarily for espionage.
