Sweden was the first to realize something was wrong
After the Chernobyl accident, the Soviet authorities didn’t release any information about the crisis that was unfolding. However, Swedish Nuclear plant employees saw high levels of radiation on their sensors and were able to pinpoint the approximate location of the source. This forced the Soviet Union to reveal the magnitude of the disaster.
