Mandel was living in a country that was under the oppressive Communist rule
and, like most Romanians he had to deal with food shortages and poverty. Despite
having a brilliant mind, Mandel had a very small monthly salary of around $88 and supporting his wife and two children was extremely
difficult. As a result, Mandel had to find a way to “get some serious money,
quickly.”
